Leading and developing other people around you, I believe, is one of the highest mantles to take up. It doesn’t matter if you are leading at the top or from the second chair, you have the power to influence people for the better.
Great leadership isn’t just about yourself, but those around you. HOWEVER, if you want to lead those around you well, you need to be leading yourself well first. This doesn’t just happen either. You have to take the initiative to grow yourself!
I recently had the privilege to record a podcast with Everything.Church on why self-leadership is so important.

Feel inadequate or like you don’t know enough?
Striving to gain just a little more self-confidence in your work?
These are all things that can be helped through self-development! In this day and age, it is so easy to get information. You just need to figure out what practical information and advice you need, and put it into practice!
This can all be done through books, blogs, articles, podcasts, conferences, social media, and personal contacts- all which I personally love! Carve out INTENTIONAL time. A 1/2 hour in the morning to read an article. Time before bed to read a book. A podcast in the car or at the gym. Find a schedule that works for you. Every little bit helps.
Ever have someone say something to you once and, from there on out, it was seared into your brain?! Here are two things my Pastor has said to me that have shaped why I prioritize self-leadership:
- “I won’t ask you to do anything that I haven’t done before.” I’m pretty sure I was scrubbing a toilet in this moment! Very glamourous. But as it pertains to self-development and leadership: grow your knowledge and put it into practice. It’s hard to ask someone to be something or do something when you are not willing to go there yourself. I want to live out good leadership so I can see the potential in others and call people to the high standard of leadership. After all, when you set the example, it gives people something to follow.
- “If you are the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.” What is there to learn then?! I want to surround myself with others who are better than me at certain things! In the end, that’s how I get better and, eventually, become more efficient in developing others. If I can provide people with help and advice, great! But I don’t need to puff myself up and gain assurance through “knowing it all.” When you’re at a conference or at work, mingle with the people who are making things happen! You have a chance to grab coffee with that influencer, snag the opportunity! I have a friend, Kim, who is a great “YouTuber”, better at SEO searches than me, and she does a heck of a good job marketing and putting herself out there. I can learn something from her! And, I did.
